Alternative Energy can refer to any form of energy for consumers and business that replaces or adds to existing fuel without the undesirable environmental consequences of the fuel being replaced.
Alternative energy almost always excludes fossil fuels and nuclear fuels.
Good examples of environmentally friendly alternative energy sources are wind power, wave power and solar power.
Geothermal power, where the natural heat of the earth is utilised, is considered an alternative energy source with very little harmful environmental impact.
At various times in the past coal has been considered an alternative energy to wood, and petrol an alternative energy to whale oil. Alcohol is now considered an alternative energy to fossil fuels.
Brazil has had an alternative energy program since the 1970's which focusses on the production of ethanol from sugar cane as a fule for vehicles to replace the fossil fuel, petroleum.
Biomass, which is living or recently dead bilogical material is currently being explored by scientists and researchers as an economic alternative energy source. Examples of biomass as an alternative energy product might be sugarcane grown for fuel or sunflowers grown for their oil to be used as a replacement for diesel fuel.
