Batteries

There are different types of battery technology available today.

Lead Acid Batteries: Lead acid batteries are proven technology and their capabilities are well-exposed. Lead acid batteries contain liquid acid which poses a significant danger if spilled. Lead acid batteries also produce hydrogen and oxygen as a normal part of their cycle and this too, can pose a significant health and safety risk. In addition lead acid batteries, particularly deep cycle or traction batteries are extremely heavy and this facto also needs to be taken into account. Onh the plus side is the proven technolgy, their ready availability new and second-hand and their ability to take multiple re-charging and discharging during their lives, particularly deep-cycle batteries.

Valve Regulated Lead Acid Batteries: Valve regulated lead acid batteries are similar to standard lead-acid batteries except the electrolyte used is in gel form which lessens opportunities for spillage and also minimises maintenance as they do not need topping up with distilled water.

Nickel Metal Hydride Batteries: Nickel metal hydride batteries are solid state batteries and research is ongoing for applications where larger batteries and higher output is needed. Currently the cost of utilising nickel metal hydride batteries in larger installations can often prove prohibitive. Specialist charge controller needed.

Lithium Ion Batteries: Lithium ion batteries which are found powering laptops, and hand power tools face similar issues to nickel metal hydride batteries. A specialist charge controller is also needed.

Fuel Cells: Fuel Cells are another emerging technology that is expensive. Price for fuel cell technology is likely to fall in the future as this form of battery is developed and taken up for multiple applications. Companies like Toyota and Ford are developing this technology to power electric cars and other electric vehicles.
