Deep Cycle Batteries are needed for electric boat applications because they are designed to be deep-cycled many times and still be rechargeable and deliver their designed power.

Deep Cycle Batteries are different in design from car or truck starting batteries which are NOT designed to be repeatedly DEEP discharged.

Deep Cycle Batteries are designed to produce a steady supply of current over a long period of time. A deep cycle lead-acid battery will have thicker lead plates than a car starting battery.

Deep Cycle Lead-Acid Batteries are the most economical and cost effective option for an electric boat today (2005). Although, there are other more efficient batteries and even emerging technologies like fuel-cells these are all currently prohibitively expensive in comparison to lead-acid battery technology.

The size of the battery bank fitted to an electric boat will determine the range of the electric boat. Options to increase range include taking advantage of additional power with wind or water turbines and solar panels.
