Solar Energy can be defined as the radiant heat and light that reaches the earth from the Sun, and that influences the Earth's climate and weather and sustains life.

Solar Energy has been harnessed by human beings in many different ways since the dawn of civilisation. Ancient civilisations used the sun to dry food, dry clothes and warm buildings for example.

Examples of how modern technology utilises Solar Energy include electricity from the sun using solar panels, space heating and cooling, heat engines, solar cookers and solar stills for the preparation of potable drinking water and the cooking of food, and heat for industry.

Passive Solar Energy Technologies include: building positioning to utilise sun-power, the selection of appropriatre materials with thermal properties for heating or cooling, and incorporating spaces that circulate air for heating or drying for example, solar ovens, solar air-conditioning, solar thermal panels, solar chimneys.

Active Solar Energy Technologies include: solar panels, solar pumps, solar fans, photoelectrochemical cells (which generate hydrogen), solar power satellites, solar cells and solar updraft towers to generate electricity.
